Animism: Lived Interbeing

Animism is the experiential ontology that has been natural to humanity for the overwhelming majority of our existence. Humans have and still do experience a world which is itself fully alive, made up of a fractally embedded diversity of living beings, from mountains to microscopics. Not only have almost all human cultures envisioned the world this way, we have taken care to communicate respectfully with its many parts, striving to navigate harmoniously as one type of being among many, all of whom need to get along and maintain the balance of a benevolent world. Not all types of beings have the kind of consciousness we associate with humans, but all have their own consciousness, intelligence, wisdom, and culture, which are no less legitimate, and are almost always vastly older than ours.

In the dominant culture we have forgotten all this, and the results are visible and terrifying. Not only in the climate crisis and incomprehensible destruction of our precious biosphere, but in losing the certainty that we are at home here in the world, our sense of togetherness and belonging, our ability to communicate with other species, the daily wonder of intimacy with the richness of creation – losing most of the joy of life. But, to quote Josh Schrei, “Animism is normative human consciousness.” The ability to perceive an animate world is as innate to humans as is the ability to learn language. We can regain and reclaim the experience of our daily world as living and intelligent, and of life as a shared process.

I agree with those who say that there is no environmental problem, only a problem of human consciousness. This offering is my invitation to start solving it, by reviving the perspective that kept us connected for hundreds of thousands of years.

The course will be held on Zoom, with 9 weekly sessions of an hour and a half that will include a talk, a short practice, homework and time for questions, with exercises for developing the animistic senses in between, with a final meeting in person. The planned topics are:

  1. What is animism? Basic perspectives and overarching themes
  2. Animals: our closest relatives
  3. Plants and fungi: sociality, intelligence, and generosity
  4. Food and eating: the foundational conundrum
  5. The smalls: the elders and main characters
  6. The land and larger beings: slow sentience
  7. Invisibles: ancestors, spirits, faeries, Gods
  8. Artifacts: a surprising presence
  9. Earth as deity and our place in the mix

Note: This course will be in Hebrew.

Ancestral Lineage Healing - course format

Any tradition of wisdom – magical, mystical, spiritual, artistic – is passed down through lineage. Earth-honoring cultures cherish and rely on lineages of blood and of wisdom, and maintain good relations with the ancestors. Humans currently in a physical body and our ancestors who have left the physical world continue to care for each other. In our culture, we have neglected these connections for the most part, and most critically, we have not undertaken to heal the wounds of past generations. Today it is clear how the traumas of previous generations are activated in our own lives, causing much suffering. Ancestral Lineage Healing is a process that restores the relationship with our bloodlines, in which we bring healing to the generations, release unwanted influences, and receive guidance, blessing, backing, and love from our ancestors.

Ancestral Lineage Healing, through the approach developed and taught by Dr. Daniel Foor, is one of the most important foundations of magical work that I have encountered, and it promotes and supports me in every area of life. The method is not related to religion or a specific spiritual path, and it occurs in a simple ceremonial space to ensure maximum safety along with direct contact with our well ancestors.

I also guide one-on-one Ancestral Lineage Healing as a certified facilitator, and the method is studied and practiced worldwide in group settings of online courses and intensive workshops as well. To expand the accessibility of this important work in Hebrew, I am opening an online course of 6 weekly sessions of one and a half hours, in which I will teach and guide the process with one lineage from beginning to end.

If you are interested in doing this work in a group setting in English, please check out the excellent offerings at Ancestral Medicine.
